Angelica is an undoubtedly eye-catching species with its impressive height, thick purple stem, two foot wide compound leaves, and huge greenish floral umbrellas. In nature, this showstopper can be found in a variety of wetlands. It prefers consistently moist, slightly alkaline soils. Angelica is an important larval host species for the black swallowtail butterfly and the short-tailed swallowtail butterfly. Its flowers attract a number of small bees and flies. This species is deer-resistant and provides food and habitat for birds. Its stems are edible and it has a long history of myriad medicinal uses.
