Yarrow is a beautiful perennial in the aster family growing three feet tall and adorned with delicate, fern-like leaves and clusters of lovely white flowers that bloom for months. It is a hardy species, growing by rhizomes and preferring poor, dry, and slightly disturbed soils. It is also a widespread and genetically diverse species, with populations native to Asia, Europe, and North America. There are likely native, nonnative, and hybrid populations that are naturalized among various regional plant communities. Yarrow is an ecologically important species, listed by the Xerces Society as having special value to native bees and supporting conservation biological control. It is used as a food source by a variety of insect groups, and some cavity-nesting birds use it to line their nests. Yarrow also has a long-standing relationship with humans. Countless cultures across the world have used yarrow for its various medicinal properties and it has even been found in neanderthal burial sites. Yarrow continues to be an important plant for humans in gardening and landscaping. Its ability to withstand drought while deterring pests and attracting beneficial insects makes it a frequently used species in many different types of plantings.
