Prairie onion is a hardy, drought-resistant species. It prefers full sun and sandy, rocky soil, but tolerates light shade and medium soil conditions. In more typical garden settings it may be outcompeted by larger plants, but it grows heartily amongst shorter companions. For weeks during the mid-summer heat, prairie onion lifts its flowering head, a stunning sphere of soft pink stars like a firework frozen in time. Due to its oniony smell, prairie onion deters deer and other mammalian herbivores.
