Wild leek is a bulbous perennial well known for the culinary value of its choice edible leaves. This sensitive species prefers woodland conditions with dappled sunlight and rich, fairly well drained medium wet to medium dry soil with little to no disturbance. It does not tolerate competition, especially from invasive species, and is therefore used as an indicator species, indicating a high quality natural environment with its presence. It is threatened in some areas.
Wild leek keeps its leaves longer than many ephemerals, adding sustained interest to a woodland planting. When its leaves die back in the summer, they are replaced by a dainty flowering stalk which supports an orb of delicate white flowers. These flowers mature into dark shiny berries that persist throughout the fall and winter, providing seasonal interest. Due to its pungent aroma, this plant is resistant to herbivory from deer and other mammals.
