Nodding onion is an extremely hardy species, though it prefers full sun in moist soils and part shade in drier soils. From a basal tuft of grass-like foliage each underground bulb extends one flowering stalk up to 18 inches high, topped with a dazzling rounded burst of soft-pink, bell-shaped flowers that “nod” toward the ground, hence the common name. Nodding onion is edible, and its pungent, oniony smell deters mammalian herbivores. This plant works well in short plantings and as a border. It can achieve an especially striking late summer effect when planted in mass.
