Prairie milkweed is similar to the well-known common milkweed, though it is less aggressive, has more vibrant pink flowers and has smooth stems, leaves, and seed pods. It can tolerate soils with more moisture than common milkweed, though it develops a deep taproot that helps it resist drought. This species is perfect for rain gardens, pollinator gardens, and naturalized plantings. Its fragrant flowers make it one of the most attractive milkweed species to pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. It is a host species for the monarch butterfly, queen butterfly, and the milkweed tussock butterfly.
