Harebell has a very delicate appearance, with threadlike stems and a modest one foot height, though it is actually an extremely robust species, thriving in poor, rocky soils and a variety of sun conditions. Its grass-like basal leaves typically wilt after the first flowers bloom in late spring. The darling blue, bell-shaped flowers will continue to bloom in waves throughout the season, often into early fall. The whole plant will typically nod under the weight of these beautiful bells, lending to the plant’s elegant disposition. The flowers are visited by a number of pollinators including bees as well as hummingbirds, though the plant is also known to self-pollinate. Harebell is a circumpolar species, meaning that it naturally grows worldwide in the northern hemisphere. The name harebell is believed to be derived from folk stories of witches, that would transform into hares, associating with this plant.
