White prairie clover is an herbaceous perennial that tends to grow in clusters of about 10 plants. Slender flowering stalks rise up to 3 feet from feathery compound foliage to support dense, cylindrical flowering spikes of small but brilliantly white flowers. These flowers open in a ring starting from the bottom of the flowering spike in early summer and working up towards the tip of the spike by late summer.
A typical component of shortgrass prairies, white prairie clover prefers dry, well-drained soil and full sun. White prairie clover is a great species for prairie restoration since its deep taproot makes it resistant to drought, and as a member of the pea family it improves soil quality by fixing nitrogen from the air. Moreover, this plant is well-liked by birds, bees, and butterflies. It is a larval host for butterflies such as the clouded sulfur, marine blue, Rearkit’s blue, and southern dogface. Use this plant in naturalized plantings or in gardens with dry soil and full sun.
