Tall larkspur Is a beautiful rhizomatous perennial rich, moist soils and full sun in cooler climates and partial shade in warmer climates. It has an attractive leaf shape and eye-catching flowering spikes that can reach as high as six feet. These spikes are whorled in spurred purple flowers in late summer, long after other members of the genus have finished blooming. A single small population may have a large variation in the bloom colors from pale purple to deep blue.
The genus name delphinium comes from the Greek word for dolphin, referring to the shape of the flower buds. These bountiful towers of spurred flowers attract a diversity of pollinators including bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. This plant looks wonderful when grouped in masses and works well in cottage gardens and garden borders.
