Hollow joe pye weed is the tallest joe pye weed, often growing five to seven feet tall or even taller if grown in full sun and moist soil. It can be further differentiated from other joe pyes by its mostly hollow, unspotted stem. Hollow joe pye weed has a sturdy, upright habit and dark green foliage which adorns its purplish simple stems in whorls of 3-5 leaves.
The genus “Eutrochium” refers to the whorled leaf structure, and the specific epithet “fistulosum” refers to the hollow stem. In late summer, hollow joe pye weed is crowned with a frothy mauve dome of flowers that are irresistible to bees and butterflies. The attractive seed heads that follow last long into the winter and are enjoyed by the swamp sparrow. With its towering stature and striking aesthetic, hollow joe pye weed makes for a wonderful rear border or architectural accent in cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, and naturalized wet settings.
