Bigleaf aster is one of our favorite plants to use in a home landscaping shade garden situation. While its fall bloom is not particularly impressive, its foliage provides tremendous visual appeal throughout the entire growing season. Spreading through rhizomes and self-seeding, bigleaf aster can form a lovely, low-growing groundcover that is not overly aggressive. Its dark green, heart-shaped leaves can grow up to eight inches in width, creating a singularly unique texture that pairs elegantly with the finer textures of shade garden favorites such as sedges and woodland flowers.
Bigleaf aster is robust to a variety of conditions although its ideal environment includes moist, well-drained soil and partial shade. Its nectar and pollen attract a diversity of insects such as bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, beetles, and plant bugs. The pearly crescent caterpillar, among many other species, feeds on other parts of the plant such as the leaves, stems, and roots.
