Tall bellflower can have either an annual or biennial life cycle. As a biennial, it forms a thick basal rosette of heart-shaped leaves its first year, then puts up a three to five foot flowering stalk its second year. The flowering stalk is covered in beautiful, starry, blue-violet flowers which attract an impressive number of pollinators including bees, wasps, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Though this plant will die after one or two years, it readily seeds itself and will generally maintain its presence in a planting. Tall bellflower prefers rich, medium soils and partial shade, though it can tolerate a variety of soil and light conditions. It’s perfect in shade gardens or woodland edge plantings for a pop of color late in the season. It also does well in naturalized settings.
