Downy woodmint is a darling member of the mint family that is perfect for cottage gardens with dry to medium soil. It is a short lived plant, though it establishes quickly to form tight, many-branched clumps supported by a complex fibrous root system. It is adorned with fuzzy leaves that are arranged in pairs up the length of its sturdy, square stems. For roughly a month starting in early summer, downy woodmint produces its eye-catching flowering spikes– stacked rings of small, purple, two-lipped flowers– that attract a variety of pollinators. After the blooms are spent, they develop into attractive stacks of rounded seed heads that persist through the winter along with the plant’s evergreen basal foliage, providing sustained seasonal interest. The leaves are lightly aromatic when crushed and generally not preferred by deer or other mammalian herbivores.
