Button blazing star is a showy, drought-tolerant perennial forb native to the eastern United States. It prefers full sun and poor, well-drained soil. It has a strong, upright habit, forming clumps of single, erect, unbranched flowering stems. Its leaves are lance-shaped and up to a foot in length at the base of the stem, and become shorter and narrower going up the plant. Pinkish-purple button shaped flowers cover the top part of the flowering spike for about a month in late summer. These flowers burst with purple styles and stamens, providing this plant with an elegant and whimsical air.

The flowers are highly attractive to a diversity of pollinators such as honey bees, bumblebees, little carpenter bees, miner bees, leaf-cutting bees, monarch butterflies, painted lady butterflies, swallowtails, sulfurs, and even hummingbirds. Mammals enjoy eating the stems, leaves, and corms of button blazing star and may affect its success when they are high in numbers. The specific epithet aspera means “rough” in latin and refers to the base of its stem and basal leaves. Compared to other blazing stars, button blazing star tends to bloom a little later and sometimes has a slightly zigzagged stem. All blazing stars hold onto their purple floral color for an extended period, making them highly useful in cut flower arrangements. Rough blazing star also works well in rock gardens, and in drier pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, garden borders, and naturalized prairie settings.
