Northern bedstraw is a widespread species native to North America, Europe, and Asia. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and is tolerant to a range of light conditions. Spreading readily by self-seeding and rhizomes, northern bedstraw has the ability to form dense colonies. It has squarish stems dressed in whorls of four slender leaves, and in the spring it produces profusions of small but bright white four-petaled flowers. Its fine texture can be used to create beautiful moments of striking contrast in landscapes such as cottage gardens and pollinator gardens. Northern bedstraw is edible and has a mildly sweet aroma and flavor. Unlike other bedstraws, northern bedstraw is hairless and therefore more palatable.
