Queen of the prairie is a singularly beautiful perennial from the rose family. In sunny, consistently moist sites, queen of the prairie can grow quite large and form rhizomatous colonies. In early summer queen of the prairie puts on its show-stopping floral display. Up to 1,000 small pink flowers open from bottom to top, and intensify in color throughout its three week bloom window. Teeming with stamen, these impactful pink plumes look like froth or foam floating above the foliage. It has bold, reddish, unbranched stems adorned with unique, deeply lobed leaves that provide an engaging texture throughout the entire growing season, even after the flowers are spent.
Due to the decline of its natural wetland habitat as well as its inability to self-pollinate, this lovely plant is threatened or endangered in several of the states that it is native to. However, this species provides little ecological value and is recommended for aesthetically oriented plantings rather than conservation efforts. Some insects eat its pollen but it provides no nectar and it is not a known host for any moth or butterfly caterpillar. Moreover, its seeds and foliage are not used by birds or mammals.
