Sweet joe pye weed is an upright, clump-forming perennial in the aster family that prefers consistently moist, well-drained soils. While it thrives in full sun, it is also a wonderful species to use as an architectural accent and pollinator magnet in shade gardens or naturalized woodland areas. With its bold stature and textured, whorled foliage, sweet joe pye weed provides visual interest throughout the entire growing season.
In late summer sweet joe pye weed produces its elegant, pink, vanilla-scented flower clusters that can reach 12 to 18 inches across. These flower clusters are truly a delight to people and pollinators alike, and the attractive seeds that follow provide visual interest late into the season. In addition to the ample bees and butterflies that visit its flowers, sweet joe pye weed also hosts various moth caterpillars on its foliage, stems, and roots such as the Eupatorium borer moth, common plume moth, red groundling, three-lined flower moth, ruby tiger moth, and common pug.
