Joe pye weed is an herbaceous perennial in the aster family that prefers full to part sun and consistently moist soils. It typically grows four to six feet tall and spreads through rhizomes to form colonies. Therefore it has the ability to overwhelm small plantings but is well suited to drainage areas, stream banks, wet prairies, or as an architectural accent in pollinator gardens and cottage gardens.
The genus “Eutrochium” refers to its whorled leaves and the specific epithet “maculatum” refers to its stems which are often covered in purple spots. In late summer, joe pye boasts showy clusters of soft pink flowers that support an abundance of pollinators such as bees and butterflies. This species is also a host plant for caterpillars such as the Clymene moth, Eupatorium borer moth, ruby tiger moth, and three lined moth.
