Purple coneflower is an iconic and easy to grow species that is resistant to deer, drought and salt. It grows up to about four feet tall and prefers medium soils in full to partial sunlight. Purple coneflower is well-loved for its impactful and long-lasting purple blooms. Drooping purple rays surround a spiky reddish cone for nearly two months during late summer. These classic prairie flowers are a preferred nectar source for myriad bees as well as butterflies and hummingbirds. The seeds that follow are enjoyed by many songbirds but especially goldfinches. Several parts of the plant have a long ethnobotanical history and are still used in pharmaceutical applications today. This plant is well-suited to cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, and garden borders, as well as larger naturalized prairie plantings.
