Illinois bundleflower is a hardy perennial that prefers full sun and can tolerate a range of medium to dry soil conditions. It has a soft, bushy texture with large, finely compound leaves that fold up in extreme heat. In the late summer, Illinois bundleflower opens fluffy white balls of flowers at the ends of its stems which mature into its iconic twisted seed bundles. This is a great wildlife species as its seeds are highly nutritious to gambirds such as pheasants and quails and its foliage is choice browse for deer and rabbits. As a member of the legume family, it harbors beneficial bacteria in its roots that allow it to fix nitrogen into the soil, improving soil quality.
