Honewort is a fairly inconspicuous woodland perennial that can grow somewhat aggressively in rich, moist soil and partial shade. It has compound leaves with three toothed, elliptical leaflets and sparse, flat-topped clusters of tiny white flowers. Though the flowers are not particularly showy or aromatic, they attract a number of pollinators including bees, wasps, and flies. Honewort is also a larval host for the black swallowtail butterfly as are many other members of the carrot family. The young leaves and stems of the plant are edible with a flavor resembling parsley, and the seeds and roots are edible as well. However, other members of the carrot family are deadly poisonous and may resemble honewort, so extreme caution is advised. Moreover, multiple species within the carrot family use the common name honewort.
