Sneezeweed is an upright, clump-forming, herbaceous perennial that thrives in full sun and wet to moist soil. It can sometimes flop in very fertile soil but this can be mitigated by cutting it back to about half its height in early summer to encourage a bushier and more floriferous habit. Sneezeweed has strongly winged stems and lance-shaped leaves. For several weeks in late summer to fall, sneezeweed is endowed with a profusion of large, sunny yellow, daisy-like flowers. It has unique, fan-shaped ray florets that end in three rounded teeth and droop downward from a large, yellowish, central globe of disk florets. Sneezeweed is pollinated by insects such as bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, and beetles, not wind, and its pollen is not responsible for fall allergies. Its common name instead refers to the fact that its dried and crushed leaves have historically been used as a medicinal snuff to induce sneezing.
