Black cohosh is slow to establish, but once it does it creates a dramatic visual effect with strongly textured foliage that forms a neat bushy shape around three feet tall and towering flower spikes that can reach up to six feet or taller. Black cohosh prefers moist, rich soils and partial to full shade. The abundant fragrant flowers provide nectar for pollinators in the summer after many woodland plants have finished flowering. Black cohosh is also a larval host for the spring blue azure butterfly. This plant is perfect for back borders and cottage plantings in shady conditions.
