Turtlehead is an upright, clump-forming perennial that prefers moist, sunny conditions. It has dark, glossy, toothed, lance leaves and short flowering spikes of white to light pink flowers which resemble stacks of turtleheads that open from bottom to top in the late summer to fall. These flowers are a great late season nectar source for a number of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Turtlehead is also a larval host plant for the Baltimore checkerspot butterfly. The genus Chelone is derived from the Greek word for tortoise.
