False boneset naturally resides in dry prairies. It prefers full sun and poor soils, though it will tolerate richer soils with more moisture as long as it does not receive too much pressure from taller companion plants. Though false boneset reaches only three feet in height, its tap root can extend 16 feet underground, making this plant extremely resistant to drought. Its loose clusters of tubular, cream-colored flowers are not particularly showy, however they are sought out by a variety of pollinators for their high nectar content. After pollination, these flowers develop into fluffy seed heads which provide great visual interest to plantings in the fall. The leaves are dark green, standing out against many of the lighter colored prairie plants, and they have a bitter taste which generally deters mammalian herbivores such as deer and rabbits. This plant is preferred by a number of grasshoppers including the contrasting spur-throated grasshopper which feeds exclusively on this species.
