False aster has a huge native range and can tolerate a variety of conditions, though it grows best in full sun. It prefers wetter soils, wherein it produces abundant masses of white aster flowers, but tends to flop. In drier soils its shape is a little neater though it produces less flowers. Its height can also vary considerably based on soil moisture, from three to five feet. Its prolific autumnal blooms are magnets to many pollinators such as butterflies, moths, long and short-tongued bees, wasps, flies, and beetles. False aster spreads by rhizomes to form dense stands, though generally not too aggressively. This plant is perfect for rain gardens, cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, deer-resistant gardens, garden back borders, roadside ditches, and naturalized plantings.
