Wild yellow indigo takes a few years to develop into deeply rooted clumps, but once it does it tolerates harsh soil conditions in full sun, while serving a tidy, rounded, floriferous appearance. Its soft, round, three-part leaves are ornamented with a dazzling display of short yellow pea flower clusters. Though these flowers are scentless, they are extremely attractive to bumblebees. In the fall the flowers develop into dark, tear-drop shaped seed pods that provide seasonal interest. Wild yellow indigo is a host plant for the wild indigo duskywing and the clouded sulfur butterfly. This plant makes a great addition to cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, and naturalized dry prairie plantings.
