Canadian milkvetch is a fairly common plant throughout North America and can tolerate a wide variety of environments. It often has a squat, branched structure with reddish stems, feathery leaves, and coned clusters of pale green, tubular pea flowers. It attracts hummingbirds, song birds, butterflies and bees, and it is a larval host for the western tailed blue, the Queen Alexandra’s sulfur, and the clouded sulfur. Though this species is browsed by wildlife, it is considered toxic and it can absorb and sequester toxins, such as pesticides, from its environment. As a member of the pea family, Canadian milkvetch fixes nitrogen into the soil.
