Green milkweed is a shorter milkweed, reaching a maximum height of about two feet. From a central taproot it grows an upright, unbranched stem that supports opposite pairs of wavy leaves and globes of tube-shaped flowers up its length. These flowers are often tinged yellow or purple as the plant reaches maturity, and their sweet scent attracts pollinators such as long-tongued bees, butterflies, and ants. Unlike other milkweeds, green milkweed is typically found growing in solitary rather than in colonies. It prefers quality environments with full sun and dry sandy soil, and it does not tolerate disturbance. However, it does resist drought as well as mammalian herbivory.
