Whorled milkweed is one of the shorter milkweeds, reaching two feet at the tallest. It has a delicate appearance, with slender, linear leaves whorled about its upright, unbranched stem, and clusters of small, fragrant white flowers grouped toward the top of the plant. Its flowers bloom between July and September, later than most milkweeds, and their sweet aroma attracts a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, beetles, wasps, and flies.
In the fall, whorled milkweed produces slender seed pods as its foliage turns yellow and red, creating sustained seasonal interest. It spreads by seed as well as rhizomes, spreading non-aggressively to form attractive drifts. It prefers full sun and well drained soils, though it can tolerate part shade as well as more medium garden soils. It is resistant to drought as well as herbivory from deer and rabbits. This species is a perfect choice for rock gardens, dry pollinator gardens, and naturalized plantings.
