Purple milkweed is a wonderful member of the milkweed genus that prefers moist but well-drained soil. It firmly supports two or three full globes of deep red-purple flowers at the very top of its thick stem. Its wide oval leaves have strong venation, and the midvein sometimes takes on a light red-purple hue. Its flowers are visited by long-tongued bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and its leaves host the larvae of the monarch butterfly. Self seeding and spreading by rhizomes, purple milkweed can form colonies, though generally not as aggressively as common milkweed.
