Pale Indian Plantain is an eye-catching perennial with an impressive eight foot height, thick, purple stem, and huge basal leaves that somewhat resemble sycamore leaves. Its flat-topped clusters of white, tubular flowers bloom in late summer. It prefers medium to well-drained soils and full sun to partial shade. It attracts a diversity of small bees and flies and provides food and habitat for birds while resisting herbivory from deer and other mammals. This plant is easily grown, though it readily seeds itself and spreads through rhizomes so it may take over smaller plantings. It is a perfect choice for a back border, living fence, or naturalized prairie planting.
