Green Dragon is a rare riparian woodland species with a one of a kind leaf shape and stunning berries. Each plant has only one compound leaf which grows in a semi-circle of leaflets decreasing in size from the center outward. Its has a spathe and spadix style flowering structure like its more well known relative, jack-in-the-pulpit, however green dragon’s flower looks quite different, resembling a flicking lizard’s tongue. In the fall the flower matures into a columnar cluster of orange and red berries. While these berries are quite visually attractive, they, like all parts of the plant, are toxic to mammals. For this reason, green dragon is resistant to herbivory from deer and rabbits.
