Spikenard is a large perennial with attractive compound foliage, large flower clusters, and red to purple berries. Although this plant resembles a shrub, it is a true herbaceous perennial, dying back each winter and growing from the ground up each spring. It tolerates a large range of light and soil conditions, though it may prefer part shade and rich, moist soil. It spreads by rhizomes and may form thickets over time. Its large umbels of small white to green flowers bloom in the summer, later than many other woodland flowers, so it adds lasting interest to shady plantings. Moreover, its berries are edible to humans and wildlife alike and will bring songbirds to your garden in the fall. Spikenard is a wonderful choice for woodland gardens and naturalized plantings.
