Pasqueflower is one of the first species to flower in the spring. It is known to unfold its solitary, pale blue to purple flower while there is still snow on the ground, even before it puts out its first leaves. Its leaves are furry and deeply lobed, creating a striking visual effect especially when paired with its wispy seedheads. This heliotropic plant is covered with soft, silvery hairs that reflect the sun making it a warm safe-haven for early pollinators such as Large Mining Bees, Andrena spp. The common name pasqueflower refers to the plant blooming around Easter. Pasque flower reaches a modest six inches tall and prefers full sun and dry, rocky soils.
