Tall thimbleweed has deeply lobed leaves which whorl halfway up its three foot stems. It flowers in the spring, each plant producing a few cute flowers with five white sepals. These flowers develop into thimble-shaped seed heads for which the plant is given its common name. As the season progresses, these seed heads open into cottony tufts which help the plant to disperse its seeds in the wind. The genus Anemone comes from the Greek word for wind, anemos. Tall thimbleweed is truly wonderful to look at all season long. It prefers full sun and well drained soil, though it can tolerate a wide range of conditions.
