Eastern bluestar has attractive shiny foliage and a pleasant upright, clumping growth form. A spring bloomer, this plant delights gardeners early in the season with its loose clusters of pale-blue, star-shaped flowers. In the fall the flowers are replaced with upright seed pods and the foliage turns an eye-catching golden hue. It prefers full sun to partial shade and rich, moist, well-drained soils, though it can tolerate a range of conditions.
A member of the dogbane family, eastern bluestar possesses the same latex-based chemical defense as milkweed, deterring herbivores such as deer and rabbits. Its big blue flower clusters will attract hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, and carpenter bees.
