Giant yellow hyssop grows heartily in full sun to part shade and fairly dry to wet conditions, reaching heights of up to 7 feet. It does not have the same aromatic quality that other members of the Agastache genus do, though its leaves are resistant to herbivory from deer and its greenish yellow flowering spikes are attractive to a number of pollinators, especially bees. The Xerces Society lists it as having special value to native bees as well as bumblebees, and supporting conservation biological control. In ideal conditions, giant yellow hyssop can spread by rhizomes, forming dense colonies.
